5 Things Your Cardiologist Won’t Tell You

5 Things Your Cardiologist Won't Tell YouOver the years I’ve found that while there are some great cardiologists who are on the cutting-edge of the latest research, there are far more cardiologists who are practicing old medicine, quite literally. In fact, here are 5 important things your cardiologist won’t tell you for at least five years. The reason? He or she just doesn’t know about these breakthroughs yet.

  1. Your heart can regenerate itself. In eye-opening new research, Swedish cellular biologists have found that cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) do indeed renew themselves. In fact, over a lifetime you will have turned over a full 40 percent of your cardiomyocytes.
  2. Cholesterol is not the villain. While cholesterol is at the scene of the crime when it comes to heart disease, it’s not the real perpetrator. The real “bad guy” is inflammation. Studies show that having elevated CRP (inflammation) puts you at twice the risk of dying from cardiovascular-related problems as those with high cholesterol. Your doctor can order a CRP blood test, and while results may vary by lab you generally want a reading below one.
  3. Supplements can improve heart function. Doctors are quick to turn to medicines, but with heart health supplements can be just as powerful. For example, taurine has been shown to stabilize the electrical activity within the heart and improve the heart’s contractile strength (take 2-3 grams daily). Plus, hawthorn berry  exhibits vasodilatory reaction—which is a fancy way of saying it helps you avoid blood circulation problems and increases circulation to your heart (take 500 mg three times a day). These two nutrients, along with the “Awesome Foursome” (see below) can help with the symptoms of congestive heart failure.
  4. Supporting ATP production can help to heal your heart. ATP is energy and the biggest energy user in your body is your heart. To support ATP production, I recommend the “Awesome Foursome.” It includes CoQ10 (100-200 mg), L-carnitine (1,000–1,500 mg in divided doses during the day, on an empty stomach, magnesium (at least 200–400 mg) and ribose (One teaspoon (5 grams) twice a day, or three times a day if you have cardiovascular problems or do strenuous exercise).
  5. Statins really work by thinning the blood. Many people think that the healing power of statin drugs is that they lower your cholesterol. But the real reason these drugs can help is because they thin the blood and improve inflammation—which as I mentioned earlier is the real culprit in heart disease.

Now it’s your turn: Do you have any cardiology questions you’d like to have answered?
